This day was created to identify small town allure and success. Communities will come to share best practices of their communities and network with other organizations and community leaders. The day will focus on the people aspect of community and economic development.

We are bringing nationally recognized experts, Don Macke and Kim Huston, to address attendees with their advice and experience. Sharing will be done through keynote addresses, panel discussions, group interaction, networking, and booth displays.

Who should attend
Those that should attend 2010 Community Field Day include community leaders, economic developers, development organizations, and those interested in discovering ways to have their community flourish. This will be open to the public for the cost of $20, but watch for early bird specials.

Bio for Don Macke

Don Macke serves as a Co-Director with the RUPRI Center for Rural Entrepreneurship. The Center works throughout the United States and supports research, outreach, education and policy development related to rural entrepreneurship. RUPRI or the Rural Policy Research Institute is a national research and policy center focusing in multiple areas including economic development, poverty, health care, telecommunications, informatics, policy analysis and community impact analysis.

Don has nearly 35 years of experience in the field of rural community economic development. He has served in the Nebraska Legislature, the Cabinet of the Nelson Administration in Nebraska, served as a consultant in nearly 40 states, Canada and the Caribbean. He has served as Co-Director for the RUPRI Center since its founding a decade ago. During this time Don and the RUPRI team have logged over 1 million miles throughout North America discovering and documenting rural entrepreneurship initiatives. Don’s education is based in a BS in Environmental Science and a MA in Regional Economics from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Lincoln Nebraska is Don’s home. He is married to Jenny Carver, a Pre-School Special Education Teacher and they have two sons – Sam and Eric.

Bio for Kim Huston

You will be hard to find a person who has more passion about small town America than, Small Town Sexy author Kim Huston. Born and raised in Bloomfield, Kentucky (pop.900) Huston now lives in Bardstown, Kentucky (pop 11,000)a small town recognized nationally as one of the best small towns in America. Kim is proud to boast that Bardstown has been mentioned in publications including “50 Best Southern Towns”, BoomTown USA , “100 Best Small Towns in America,” was named by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as “One of the Next Great Adventure Towns” and was listed by Where to Retire Magazine as one of the “Best Places to Retire.”

A former broadcast journalist, Kim Huston is now the President of the Nelson County Economic Development Agency in Bardstown, where she and her team oversee all economic development activities including the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Commission, Industrial Development and Main Street Development.

During her broadcast journalism years, Kim won several Associated Press awards for her feature stories based on events in her hometown and hosted the television program “On Location” that featured the places, events and characters in her county. As an economic recruiter, Kim has the opportunity to talk with companies and site consultants from all across the U.S about why they choose certain locations and what makes a small town a good place to do big business.

Kim also serves on the Kentucky Association for Economic Development Board of Directors where she has been named the “Economic Professional of the Year.” She also serves as chairman of the Lincoln Trail Area Development District Workforce Investment Board and co-chairs a 26-county WIRED65 Initiative that is designed to promote regionalism and bringing big cities together with small towns to work together to become a more competitive region.

• Entrepreneurship
• Youth Engagement & Attraction

Booths:

Businesses and Organizations are invited to bring booths to give more information to the public and showcase their mission, purpose, and services.
